Why Do We Love Our Dogs and So Much?

by admin on January 23, 2013

“The dog’s agenda is simple, fathomable, overt: I want. “I want to go out, come in, eat something, lie here, play with that, kiss you. There are no ulterior motives with a dog, no mind games, no second-guessing, no complicated negotiations or bargains, and no guilt trips or grudges if a request is denied.”  ―    Caroline Knapp

I’ve always said , “I love dogs more than people”. That’s been my mantra for years.  Why is this?  I’m not alone about how  I feel  about my dogs.  Anyone who knows me knows me, knows how I feel;  perhaps how “we” feel.  This is truly a global feeling.  I have friends all over the world, and they feel the same way. To say they’re passionate about their dogs, is an understatement.

I have always asked owners to tell me 1 thing about their dogs. ” Unconditional love,  loyalty,  security”. I can see it in their eyes when they tell me why they love their dogs.  Even my most stern clients, melt when they tell me a fact about their dogs.  A smile appears.  Their face changes and softens, their arms reach down to touch their dog, when they tell me what moves them. It’s the most profound experience for me.

I am Dogmatic!  I live, breath, survive in a world with dogs.  The views of owning a dog have changed throughout the years.  We now consult our vets, have groomers, use daycare, have dog walker, clothes, special foods, dog trainer, behaviorist, books, songs, bereavement groups, we rescue, we foster, we just give.  We mourn the loss of our love ones to our core.  I loss so deep, our words say: “My life will never be the same.”  Our pets have morphed in to our family members.

The role of our pals are changing as our lives change. Did you know that in the U.S, the amount of money we spend on our dogs has jumped from $17 billion to $43 billion.  Why is this?  We treat our dogs like family. Indeed I do.

I own a doggy daycare, Chasin Pets, this is not a plug for me.  I am obsessed with dogs. It’s who I am.  I learn from them, study them, love them, treat them for illnesses, consul owners.  I have willingly become a resource for everything dogs. I said I was obsessed with dogs. I am.  Simply said, they make me happy. They humble me.

It’s a fact that our lives keep changing right? We marry, we divorce, we have babies, we move, we work hard at our jobs. So when we come home, out of the chaos, who do we lean on for love and support?  Our dogs.  Unconditional love.  We bend down to scratch an ear, pat a head, kiss a nose. They are woven in to our family. No longer are they just dogs.  We give thought to what to name them, we  even nickname them.  They fill a gap that in the past might have been supported by family or our neighborhoods. We feel a bit guilty for leaving alone.  We buy toys to occupy their time, when we leave.  We wonder what they do when we’re gone.  We worry about them.

Perhaps, they are the only ones who truly understand us without judgement. Perhaps they have taught us a thing or 2 about compassion, forgiveness and awakening.

I enjoyed your Blog! I have one on my website, but rarely write much. I should take the initiative from yours and get busy! Do you mind if I cross post some of your content to mine with the link to your website? I started full-time pet sitting and dog walking April 2011, but worked at it part-time since 2001. I have several clients now, but not quite enough for full-time. Any hints on how to get client numbers up would be appreciated. Thanks! I am bookmarking the Blog.
