OH Lord I’m So Bored!!

I have to admit, there are just those days that I’m so bored that nothing, and I mean nothing can lift my spirit. Not a phone call from a friend, not a run, not a book or TV. I’m just bored and nothing sounds interesting to me.  The same thing happens to your dogs.

I hear this all the time: “My dog ate my phone, or the TV remote.  My shoes are thrashed! He dug up all my Petunias!”  Why? They’re so bored that they get in to trouble.  They want to find something interesting to do and if that’s not provided……they will find their own way of dealing with this issue.

Needless to say, it’s not pretty. They always make poor choices when they get bored.

What can you do?  Dogs need to think. Walking or running makes them think. It uses their brains.  Like us, they need to use their brains. There’s good news here! Even if you can’t get all the walks in, I have a solution that I use with my dogs.  I need to keep them busy and thinking about a job.  So, I’ve found a couple of toys that make them sit down, relax and think. Yes they have to think.  Like a well oiled machine, their brains need to work all the time. Even our seniors.  Especially our seniors.

I like the busy brain toys.  Here’s 1 that takes the edge off of boredom.  I take a Kong toy and fill it with healthy treats.  This toy forces them to think about getting to the treats. It makes them think and takes that edge off. I have several sizes for each dog.  You have to match your toys to the size of your dog. That’s important. Also sturdy and safe pull toys help too.  Again, match all toys to the size of your dog.  We want them to engage with the toy and have fun.  Too big or too small, just doesn’t work.  Toys don’t take the place of exercise. You have to mix plenty of exercise in.  Excercise is good for them and good for you too.

Interaction with other dogs, that you know, also  helps keep their brains working.  They have to make decisions about what to do.  These activities, keeps their brains in working order. Also mix in TALKING.  Repetition in your commands, talking to them, keeps our pals thinking.

Don’t forget to check your toys for loose threads or parts. Keep them safe and clean.

So let’s give our dogs the best we can.  Interactive toys will give them hours of joy. Take them on your walks and talk to them all the time. Watching paint dry is boring! We’ve all been there.

Love it as always and so so true, its like I always say Layla might not run and play in the park like others but her just being outside, lying in the sun and watching the people and dogs is healthy – thanks for the great article xxxx

Shelly, I always appreciate your support here. And Layla has the right idea. Just relaxing and knowing how to take the day in is so important. She’s thinking! She’s so smart. You also keep her so busy and thinking with your adventures to the park, seeing her friends, seeing the people you both enjoy. She’s has lots to do. What a great life!

then your dog will be fine. At this time of year just check to be sure they don’t get too cold, and a good thing to do in a run if they do get cold is to get a tunnel mutehod igloo house or make a long narrow wooden dog house and put in a thick layer of cedar shavings around the edges of the bed. This will keep them cozy even in some of the really cold weather. An adult dog will be content as long as you make sure that everyday they get plenty of exercise, mental stimulation/training, and quality time with you. Just be careful if your dog is not spayed or neutered as dogs will climb 8 foot fences and in rare cases mate through chain-link. So if your dog is not altered you would need a top and some sort of barrier around the bottom couple of feet.
