How to Choose the Best Puppy Food

by admin on January 17, 2013

I get questions about what is the best puppy food to buy all the time.  First before I tell you my thoughts,, ask you vet about food products and the best way to introduce your new baby to food.  I use my vet’s advise all the time.  Now on to food for your puppy.

This can be a very daunting project for you. How much do I feed my puppy? What’s the best food? Canned vs Kibble?  Lots of choices and what do you do?

Choosing the right puppy food is very important.  You want the best food right out of the gate.  They need nutrients that are healthy and good calories.  They burn calories very quickly, even when they sleep.  So we want to ensure that they get the best start from the beginning for growth for their bodies, bones, brains and energy levels.  Their overall health depends on the right food for them.  It’s not only important to give them the correct amount of food, but also the right kind of food.  Skimping on food will lower their energy levels. You will not be happy, and your puppy will not be happy if this happens.

Size does matter.  If you have a large puppy, feeding them food made for a small breed will not help in their growth and well-being.  You have to pick out food that pertains to the size of you pup. Consult your vet on the proper food for the breed of your dog.  Feeding a large breed puppy, food meant for a small pup can lead to too many calories for that breed. Feeding the larger breeds, smaller pup food can also lead to an overload of calcium.  This can cause problems down the road for you.  Additionally, not feeding them enough calories and too little calcium also causes problems. It’s very important to make sure your pup is getting all their nutrients and enough food. You want to figure out what the best food is  for you pal. This is why your vet plays an important role in the healthy growth for you puppy.

Let’s talk Filers: Read the packaging carefully.  Manufacturers use fillers. It’s inexpensive. Fillers are used in dog food to “fill” it out. Look for common fillers like, wheat, grains, corn or corn gluten meal.  These fillers provide no nutritional value for your pup and can lead to a malnourished pet. It can also lead to overeating, since your pup must eat more to get the proper amount of nutrients.  See my blog on Food Glorious Food.

What’s The First ingredient You See on the Package?

Read the package ingredients.  Look for some source or protein or meat.  If you don’t see that listed first, move on. The first ingredients on the package are the ones that are high in that dog food. Puppies need meat in their food, which is protein. So look to see if that is listed 1st.  If you don’t see meat or a protein listed, you’re buying food that has loads of fillers and preservatives, which more than you pup needs.

Canned Food vs Kibble?  This is a question for your vet. You want to maintain healthy weight and growth and some canned foods are wonderful and some canned foods have too many calories.  Speed dial you vet for a consultation for the best choices.

I am so glad that I cam across your blog. it is not easy having a dong and when I get my pup food I see that I spend a lot more time in the pet food aisle trying to make sure that I get her the right food. She is a big pup but I am always trying to control her weight for I have noticed that other foods make her bloated.

Hi Ms. Positivity. It’s not an easy taks finding the best dog food for our pals. The labels can be very confusing as well as all the recalls that I keep up on. The best way to learn more is go to the sites that I listed in the blog it will help you out with label reading. Also, if you dog is getting bloated, it’s time time to call your vet. Many foods can cause allergies. So it’s better to be safe now then sorry later. Also bigger dogs require different types of healthy dog food for their size and calories in order for them to grow and develop. Keep me posted on the bloating issue and let me know what you vet recommends regarding this. So glad you read the blog and found it useful. If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here and I will get to them.

I actually did a lot of research on “best puppy food,” and purchased one very carefully. Funny thing is that after my roommate fed my puppy some human food, she is not eating any food that I bought and goes crazy everytime I eat. Is there any way to fix this problem? I’m okay with feeding my puppy some people food maybe once a month or once every two months, but I’m not comfortable with feeding my puppy everytime she whines. My roommate always gives her food to stop her from crying and whining. It’s driving CRAZY!

Hi Amy! Glad you read my blog post on puppy food. Stay the course. Human food, especially for a pup, as they’re growing and developing is not good in my opinion. Puppies need calories to grow. You’re also going to teach your baby to beg for food every time you sit down for a meal. Not only will you get annoyed, so will your friends. No begging for treats. Feed your baby excellent quality food made for them. Consult your vet if you have more detailed questions. No dining for them at the table. Hope this helps and so happy to hear from you. Cheers!

Puppy grows fast so firstly you should know idea of food what might they look for their proper growth. high quality of dog food is more expensive but we should have focus on ingredients that promote good health because their health depends upon the food they are provided if we give them healthy food they will never get sick. it is important to have healthy ingredent in their food. The best food is divided into three part like moist, semi-moist and dry among all three of them best one used would be the dry type of puppy food because it contains more meat protein.

Hi Ji Hun! Thank you for your excellent comments on How to Choose the Best Puppy Food. You’re right, finding the best puppy food is so important and this is not the time to skimp. Puppies need lots of healthy food choices to grow. Some folks do add moist to their diets. However, a healthy kibble along with a healthy moist puppy food is great. Kibble strenths their little teeth too. Great comment and I look forward to hearing from you again. Cheers!
