I wrote a blog called Food Glorious Food and received such a tremendous response, I thought, “why not talk about the treats we give our companions”. Good idea, right? We all have treats on hand. What’s life without a little treat? Hey, I use them all the time because my kids are cute. After all, I can’t resist those eyes.

Food Glorious Food, made me think about the  ingredients in my kids treats. I never gave that much thought until now. After doing a little research, I discovered  that  some treats we may give to our dogs or cats can be harmful. Here’s why. The ingredients are not fresh or prepared poorly.  They sit on shelves or in warehouses for long periods of time.  Furthermore,  some of the rawhide bones we give our dogs, aren’t created equally. Some rawhide bones have been known to create intestinal problems!

How can that be? It’s the way they’re processed and where  they are shipped from.  You’ve seen the recall lists.  Some, not all, of the  treats are processed using formaldehyde and even arsenic. Like I’ve said before, you gotta know where your treats are shipped from. You all know the saying: “You can never be too Rich or  too Thin”.  I joke but it’s true. Too many treats fatten up your dog. Loading up on treats doesn’t equal love. Be aware of the calories your dog’s treats have, so they don’t consume more calories than needed.  Wait did you Say I Gained Weight? Yup, I did! Your “bum” does look big in those jeans! Too many calories, can cause obesity, which can lead to arthritis.

Now, don’t write in hammering me about not giving treats. That’s not what this blog is all about.

There are a number of healthy treats out there to choose from. In my next post, we’ll pick up on this topic and I’ll offer you some helpful hints on how to choose the kind of treats that are good TO and FOR your dog.

I hope you’ll join me.
