Don’t Forget Sunscreen For Your Dog!

by admin on May 13, 2012

Who knew that dogs need sunscreen? It’s true they do.  I have 2 dogs that I discovered needed sunscreen.  I have a pug, that we shave down due to the amount of hair he has, which is over the top! I also have a tiny white toy poodle who loves to lay out in the sun. Cute right?

I began to think about sunscreen for my dogs. I use sunscreen all the time. I’m out in the sun daily, walking dogs.  I wear it for protection, shouldn’t they?  This thought has been in my brain for years. You and I know the harmful effects from ultraviolet rays, not to mention skin cancer! YIKES.

So, I started to use my own sunscreen on Winston the pug and Rainbow the poodle for protection.  The sunscreen used for people is different from sunscreen that is used for dogs, due to their ingredients. But it’s better than nothing.  Who would have thought that sunscreen is important to use on your dogs?  I thought that their fur would be enough protection. I was wrong. Their noses are exposed to the sun, areas that are shaved, same thing, ears, skin surrounding their lips and more. The sun can penetrate their fur. Yup! So what to do?

Here’s what I’ve come up with.  If you have ideas about this topic, let me know.

1. All dogs need sunscreen. Welcome to the new world of helping to protect our friends. We should use sunscreen, so should they.

2. If you are in a pinch, use the sunscreen that you use for their nose, ears, lips, areas exposed to the sun and their bodies. Know that ingredients in our sunscreen can irritate their skin.

3. The sun can penetrate through their fur. Fur is no longer thought to be enough protection, especially during months where the sun is out longer and hotter.

4. I’m trying out a new sunscreen developed by a vet. Just so you know, I am NOT endorsing this product, nor do I get a dime for writing about this product. This is what I’m trying out and you should always ask your vet before trying anything new for your dog or pup. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Epi-Pet Sunscreen. Epi-Pet is non-oily, water-resistant, developed for dogs. In an article by the Sarasota Herald Tribune, “ Epi-Pet has been formulated to be compatible with the dog’s skin chemistry, which differs significantly from that of people. (Note to cat owners: Epi-Pet contains salicylates, which are harmful to cats if ingested).”

5. I’m going to give this product a try to let you know my thoughts. If I like it, I will tell you. If I feel it needs more work, I’m going to tell you that too. The important thing to remember is that our dogs do need sunscreen.

I like to keep it healthy and use real meat, but I will use kbblie, and cheese, and any sort of brand of dog treats that are soft and easy to cut up and swallow. But I try to stick with the fresh stuff.

Hi Enrika! I like that you’re using a healthy food. Check out my blog post on Food Glorious Food. There is a link in that blog that will lead you to food that has been recalled. It’s updated all the time. I’m not a fan of giving dogs just any sort of treats. There are so many healthy treats out there, even carrots and peas are a better choice for treats and cheaper. Always read the back ot the package for what is healthy. Fillers, are not healthy in dog/cat food at all. I hope this was helpful for you. Let me know how that works out for you.
Thank you for the read. I hope to see you again. Cheers!
