5 Easy Treat Tips to Keep Your Pal Safe

by admin on February 26, 2013

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about safe treats for my dogs and the dogs, I watch at my company, Chasin Pets.  There have been so many issues with dog treat recalls lately, I felt the need to write about it.

There have been numerous recalls regarding chicken jerky from China dog treats with peanut butter. Last year, there were several dog food products and dog treat recalls.  So with that in mind, I thought;” what a great way to talk about dog treats and safety.”

I have 5 easy ideas to help us all out.

1.  Pick out the correct size treat for the size of your dog.  Dog treats that are to big, given to a small dog can be dangerous.  Dog treats that are too small, given to a larger dog may cause them to choke.  There are so many great treats out there that fit the needs of your dog, no matter what size.   Ask your pet food specialist and your vet for some great ideas.

2.  Check the recall list frequently.  This is how you’re going to keep on top of what’s going on.  Recalls happen.  Check the FDA recall list to ensure that your treats and dog food on not on their list.

3.  This is a pet peeve for me.  Please don’t feed table scraps.   Many human foods contain toxic ingredients that can seriously poison your dogs. Onions, onion rings, grapes, raisins.  You eat your food and you let them enjoy their food.

4. Don’t Give Bones: Dogs are great chewers.  Please don’t give your dog a chicken or turkey bone.  I hear of clients doing this much more during the holiday months.  This bones, splinter and your dog can end up with an obstruction that can be life threatening. These bones have sharp edges and can lead to bleeding, internal injuries and worse.

5. Feed your dog treats, made especially for them, for canine consumption.  You eliminate the risk of giving them treats that have toxins in them for dogs or treats that could cause injury.

I want to make giving treats a fun and healthy part of you and your dogs daily well-being.  This is not to scare you, but to help you move through the complicated dog treat world we live in.
