10 Smartest Dogs Breeds. Is Your Dog On The List?

by admin on August 20, 2012

I know my dogs are the smartest dogs in the world. However, I looked high and low to find my pug on the list. You might have guessed it. They are not even listed! The horror.  However, my 2 poodles made the list. You might think poodles are too snobby. But they made the cut. In fact, they’re 1st on the list. Who knew?  Poodles have a high opinion of themselves

Did your dog make the list? Remember these lists change all the time. So don’t worry if your dog didn’t make the list this time around.

1.  Poodles got the 1st place spot here. They excel at lots of tasks, including commands. They have smarts. I still think my pug should have been right here. Not the case. Poodles, know tricks, have great memories. As I say; “Poodles, got it going on”.

2.  Siberian Husky made the number 2 spot. They have been known to find their way home, traveling hundreds of miles back to their families.

3.  Doberman Pinschers ranked #3 here.  Extremely brainy dogs. They have been viewed as dangerous since they have been used as guard dogs. However, I have found them to be big, gentle lovers.

4.  Border Collies hit it, ranking #4. Smart dogs with a herding instinct. I’ve seen them herd little children in a home environment. I’m still looking for a pug!

5.  American Cattle Dog. This breed is also a herder. To add to their smarts, the Aussies are also great problem solvers and have excellent organizational skills. You could probably give them a job at your office.

6.  German Shepard. You have to give to this breed. The are very adaptable. They’ve been utilized as police K9 units, used in the battlefields, even on TV. They are easily trained and have an amazing desire to please.

7.  American Pit Pull.  You may think this dog should not have made the cut. But they did and should have.  This dog has a huge desire to please and are extremely adaptable. Many of these dogs have been rescued from fighting clubs and have found good homes.

8.  Parson Russell Terrier. I work with these dogs at my business. You might know them as Jack Russell Terriers. They are sturdy little smarty pants. They have a huge desire to please their owner. They are fast on their feet.

9.  Papillon. The French word for butterfly, since that’s what their ears look like. Don’t be fooled by their dainty demeanor. These dogs are uber smart. They’ve been known to think of themselves as big dogs in a small body.  The Papillon is very sassy and very smart, Hence they rank #9 on this list of smart dogs.

10.  Shetland Sheepdog.  What? Yes this breed is a major herd breed. Knowing what to do and when to do it.  Not only are they great herd dogs and have a desire to please their owners all the time. They’re amazing problem solvers with great memories.

So, did your dog make the list?  I’m sure you will have a thing or 2 to add to the list. I wonder what happened to the Lab?

Hope you enjoyed this blog post. Feel free to let all about your dog. I’m still looking for the pug to be listed.  Follow me on facebook; Alanna aka The Dog Buddha.

If it holds true that the dumber the dog the easier they are to train the pug is a genius. Seriously, the pug, especially when they’re young are fiercely independent. They can do anything that the other breeds can do unless it seems nonsensical to them. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. LOL

I love your story Bill. You know I’m a pug lover! Just look at Winston. Although our breeds were not mentioned on the 10 Smartest Dogs List, I do that they are very, very smart, kind, affectionate. They’re just stubborn, as is their nature. Perhaps that’s why that study didn’t mention our group. Fear not, these studies change up all the time. The Lab wasn’t mentioned, and they are smart dogs too! I send you my best Bill. I love that you comment and support my blog. Cheers!

Well, I know our kids didn’t make the list. However, I agree with you 100% Bill on our pug kids.

You know, Arlene, I totally get that. I looked for my pug on the list. Clearly not there, however, I think he’s brilliant too. I love the fact that you have 2 different types of dogs. You should post a photo on my facebook wall some time: Alanna aka The Dog Buddha. I would love to see those 2 smart dogs there. Thank you for the read too.
